BIRDS AND THE CURIOSITY, co-written by Olivia Xing and Gefei Liu, at the Hollywood Fringe Festival

Reviewed by Guy Picot

BIRDS AND THE CURIOSITY is a gloriously theatrical offering from a diverse and dedicated cast. Somewhere between a fairytale and a Chinese legend, it tells the story of a young schoolgirl being visited and advised by her future self. A twisted version of The Ugly Duckling ensues, albeit with a satisfying twist. There is also a B story about an ailing grandmother with a hamster (called Hamsta) who is somehow also a pirate.

Originally written in Chinese by Gefei Liu and Olivia Xing (who also co-direct), the piece retains its delightful otherworldliness.

The largely multi-roling cast are all very strong, but standouts for me were Tristan Sansom as Mrs. Bai and Hamsta, and Yishan Hao as Robin.

If you feel you have seen enough one-person shows where actors play themselves, then this charming piece of genuine World Theatre might be a breath of fresh fringe air.  It is a nice ninety-minute reminder that shows can come in all shapes, shades and sizes.
