25 plays per hour. “How successful could that be?” I thought.
On one hand the prospect of experiencing so much material in such a short span seemed exciting, at least from a writer’s point of view. As an audience member, I wondered if it would be tedious. Having now, “been there, done that,” I’d have to say, it went over surprisingly well.
Theatre Unleashed is currently presenting its special brand of dramatics once again for Fringe with a series of 25 short plays, starting and ending on the second from front to back, in 60 minutes. Headed by Managing Director and writer, Greg Crafts, Unleashed is a dedicated writing/performing group, and this year, the material is tight.
My last Fringe visit with them was for the 24 Hours Play Festival which hosted plenty of hoot & hollarin’ silliness and partly formed comedic ideas, delightfully spontaneous, which did a fairly decent job of showing off the talent in the company. There was a fair amount of that here as well. But this time around, the ensemble was really well put together, and the parodies were exceptional, getting right to the punch.
25 Plays Per Hour gets a bit long, at the bitter end. But the skits and bits are funny, managing to tell great, full blown, complete and understandable stories in just minutes, making this production, possibly one of the more watch worthy varietals of Hollywood Fringe this year. Always a great time!
