For most of the 20th century, the U.S. government systematically removed Native American children from their homes and placed them with white families. Even as recently as the 1970s, one in four Native children nationwide was living in non-Native foster care, adoptive homes or boarding schools. Many of these children experienced devastating emotional and physical harm from adults who mistreated them and tried to erase their cultural identity.
A panel comprised of members of the Native American community will describe how their families were impacted by these acts and explore parallels to similar things happening today with immigrant families being separated at our borders.
A screening of Dawnland, a feature-length documentary that traces the first government-sanctioned truth and reconciliation commission in the United States, will follow the discussion.
The film tracks the commission’s journey across Maine, to gather testimony and bear witness to the devastating impact of the state’s child welfare practices on families in Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribal communities. Collectively, these tribes make up the Wabanaki people. The film was directed by Adam Mazo and Ben Pender-Cudlip.
