While DJs spin classics on the turntables that defined the era, fans can enjoy block party style food from LA favorites Homeboy Industries (Saturday, 7/14) and In-N-Out Burger (Sunday, 7/15).
Upendo Taylor is an artist, designer, and lover of life. A Watts, California native and long time NYC resident, Upendo’s inspiration is drawn from the streets, sports, music, fashion, friends, political and social issues, pop culture, and cartoon characters. Through hand drawn skills, computer design and a can of paint, Upendo has developed an original design aesthetic that opened doors to collaborations with Nike, Adidas, World Industries Skateboards, Akademics, Burton, Guess, Gatorade, Columbia/Sony Records, Vh1, Raphael Saadiq, Stones Throw Records, Strong Arm Steady, Black Milk, and Danny Brown. While cultivating his passion for art and design, in 2005 Upendo partnered with Ron Upperman, and together, two artists started the apparel brand, Leroy Jenkins. With an avant-garde design Leroy Jenkins has built a global audience and a cache of tastemakers.
Soles by Sir will be creating custom Snowfall inspired kicks on-site. Sir is Marcus Rivero, who began his career painting a custom pair of Nikes for a Valentine’s Day gift. After the photo of the kicks got around Instagram, Nolan Carroll of the Miami Dolphins reached out and asked Marcus to create a pair of shoes for him. After falling in love with his pair, Carroll commissioned game cleats to be painted. Since then, Soles by Sir has partnered with the NFL and NBA, and painted shoes for 450+ players.
Homeboy Industries provides hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community. Each year over 10,000 former gang members from across Los Angeles come through Homeboy Industries’ doors in an effort to make a positive change. They are welcomed into a community of mutual kinship, love, and a wide variety of services ranging from tattoo removal to anger management and parenting classes. Full-time employment is offered for more than 200 men and women at a time through an 18-month program that helps them re-identify who they are in the world. They also offer job training so they can move on from Homeboy Industries and become contributing members of the community.
Beautify Earth will be taking over the exterior on La Cienega, and creating a custom installation inspired by LA and the vivid colors of Snowfall. Beautify Earth is on a mission to put an end to blighted walls and fixtures by empowering artists, encouraging social responsibility, and instilling community pride in impoverished or neglected communities, streets, walls and fixtures.
