A Noise Within (ANW) will present a first-of-its-kind Costume Runway Show on Tuesday, July 18 at 6:00pm, at the theater in Pasadena.
At this event, A Noise Within’s Resident Artists will walk the runway wearing some of the company’s most scene-stealing costumes including creations by costume designers Garry D. Lennon, Jenny Foldenauer, Leah Piehl, and resident artist Angela Balogh Calin.
From select productions across ANW’s 25-year history, these costumes range in style from the 1700s to the present, and range from truly realistic, period-correct attire to outlandish and creative ensembles that could only have been fashioned today.
The designs run the gamut: fluffy chiffon ball gowns, British parlor garb, fine 50s Dior influenced fashion, haute couture, leopard print suits, and dress confections made of yards of silk, satin, crinoline, and tulle, with just the occasional umbrella or bowler thrown in.
Ensembles shown portray time, period, thought and mood – as well as the recent productions they were created for including: A Flea in Her Ear; Pericles, Prince of Tyre; The Tempest; You Never Can Tell; The Imaginary Invalid; Figaro; Tartuffe; Arcadia; King Lear; The Maids; The Dance of Death; A Christmas Carol; Man of La Mancha; The Importance of Being Earnest; The Threepenny Opera; The Beaux’ Strategem; and Macbeth.
At this event, guests can meet ANW actors and designers to learn about how some of the most fashionable, outlandish and evocative costumes were created. Co-Producing Artistic Directors Julia Rodriguez-Elliott and Geoff Elliott and their team of artists discuss how costumes shape the way in which audiences perceive the characters. They also divulge behind-the-scenes tales of construction feats, wardrobe malfunctions, and performance success.
Julia Rodriguez-Elliott said, “We thought this would be a fun and delightful way to have a different experience with A Noise Within. We spend a lot of creative energy on the costuming — even the most straightforward of period dress holds secrets about how character is revealed through costuming. And a lot of the aesthetics associated with A Noise Within are represented in the design of our costumes.”
This festive evening begins with a cocktail reception at 5pm, followed by the uniquely staged show at 6pm. As actors walk the runway, members of the ANW creative team will share insightful tidbits about the inspiration, development, and creation of the pieces.
Resident and Guest Artists will be on hand to model and talk about inhabiting and repurposing the ensembles, and even about the occasional wardrobe malfunction. Joining Producing Co-Artistic Directors Geoff Elliott and Julia Rodriguez-Elliott will be Resident Artists and actors Susan Angelo*, Alan Blumenfeld*, Abby Craden*, Apollo Dukakis*, Rafael Goldstein*, Jill Hill*, Kasey Mahaffy*, Jeremy Rabb*, Carolyn Ratteray*, Erika Soto*, Deborah Strang*, and Stephen Weingartner*, along with Robert Oriol (Sound Design) and Ken Booth (Lighting Design). Guest Artists in attendance – Kelsey Carthew*, Jack Elliott, Megan Farber, Savannah Gilmore, Richy Storrs, and more. *denotes member of Actor’s Equity Association.
ANW wishes to express its gratitude to the Performers’ Unions: Actors’ Equity Association, American Guild of Musical Artists, American Guild of Variety Artists, and SAG-AFTRA through Theatre Authority, Inc. for their cooperation in permitting the Artists to appear.
Proceeds will benefit A Noise Within’s ongoing artistic and educational efforts.
