Watching 79 year old Jazz legend Pete Escovedo backstage, only a few feet away, was like riding the fiery tail of a shooting star, surging through the heavens.  The crowd was wild for him and his music.  The love was mutual.

Of all of the places I could have chosen, behind the stage was the most magical.

pete escovedo jazz music hollywood and highlandHollywood & Highland kicked off its FREE kjazz 88.1 FM Sponsored, Summer Jazz Concert series last night under the open air sky with a special appearance by headliner, Pete Escovedo and the Latin Jazz Orchestra to several hundreds of casual mall shoppers and sojourners bent on their final destination at the 2nd floor courtyard.

What revelry!  Attendees were treated to abundant seating, (although plenty were dancing in the aisles) with, for an additional $10, a sumptuous menu by Wolfgang Puck Catering paired with fines wines by Stella Rosa.

On the 3rd Floor balcony VIP Press Lounge, guests were treated to an insatiable variety of delectable nibbles (mini red peppers stuffed with crab salad were my favorite!) and a high end view of the entire crowd and stage.  Other restaurant venues on the upper floors stayed open and also offered a feast of  food and sound for diners as well as patrons making last minute purchases before stepping out to hear the concert. All were welcome.

Exciting all around, the orchestra ended on a high note with a cover of Pharrell Williams’, “Happy” — and boy were we!  Music, dancing, drinking, eating — the night was sheer perfection.

The concert series which will continue every Tuesday evening throughout the month of July hopes to attract music and wine enthusiasts alike.  The proceeds from the wine bar will directly benefit Project Angel Food (www.angelfood.org), a non-profit organization, whose mission is to deliver free and nutritious meals to men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS and other serious illness.

It is FREE.  So no excuses!  Get yourself out to the Hollywood & Highland Mall for the remaining dates, which will finalize on July 29th with the incredible Poncho Sanchez.
