#HFF13: Lost Moon Radio Presents Roger Wodehouse’s Androgymnasium, reviewed

Androgymnasium Lost Moon Radio theater review

Reviewed by Tracey Paleo, Gia On The Move

When BBC executives asked glam rock icon Roger Wodehouse to do a children’s television show in 1975, he had two questions.  One: “Would he be allowed to talk openly about his fluid sexuality?” Two: “Would there be animal guests?”

This reviewer just wants to know, “Is that even legal?”

Perverse, salacious, hilarious! It was the sickest performance yet that I’ve seen from Los Angeles mainstay comedy troupe and Hollywood Top of Fringe “incumbents” Lost Moon Radio. What can I say, since experiencing Lost Moon’s brand of insatiable (dry) humor in 2011, I’ve been a fan and my 2013 re-visit was not a disappointment.

It was not the latest radio musical review I was expecting.  Instead, the gang decided to present a recovered television episode of Roger Wodehouse’s Androgymnasium, an outrageous and very twisted Ziggy Stardust style persiflage, hell bent on teaching your kids the alphabet and creating a future where girls and boys and boys who are really girls and girls who are really boys can all live together in harmony – on Venus – learning very couture arts & crafts.

Accompanied by a jaded, hard rocking band, this show is aided by a slew of guests from famous artists and contemporary fashion designers to puppets, mapmakers and even Roger’s dead mother who manages to disappoint her son even in the after life.  There is music, dancing, costumes, an overabundance of sexual identity references, bizarre nonsensical Sesame Street style lesson plans, jealousy, break-ups and make-ups, which send Roger into fits of rage and stage hogging.  But you’ll find that although this gender-bender can be bitter, he has a heart and a bright outlook for a triumphant future.  He’s hard not to love.  And we actual learn an important lesson about friendship.  Go figure!

Not recommended for “normal” audiences.  Required is an expanded mind and a strident sense of humor.  You WILL  have fun.

Four more shows playing at the Fringe Mainstage 6209 Santa Monica Blvd.
