Run For The Roses and The Pie: Derby Party Ideas for the Big Race Day

Run for the rosesThe annual Run for the Roses makes a festive occasion for gathering friends and indulging in good food.

Whether a horse race fan or not, throwing a Kentucky Derby party can liven up the sometimes lackluster month of May. With a nearly 140 year history, the Derby (also known as the Run for the Roses, because of the rose covered blanket the winning horse earns) offers a vibrant theme for party organizers.

Interested in planning your own Kentucky Derby Party? Incorporate these ideas:

• Plan your party for Saturday, May 4th – the race will begin around 6:30 p.m. (ET), so have your guests arrive early for a late afternoon celebration.

• Fashionable attire is a must at the Derby. Linen suits and oversize hats are common. Encourage your guests to bring their own, or pick up a selection from a thrift store. Kentucky Derby Attire

• Serve Mint Juleps. Add an extra twist to the traditional Derby drink by adding a dash of Nielsen-Massey Vanilla Pure Orange Extract to each beverage.

• Set up a photo booth, with extra hats, fake mustaches, or jockey attire.

• Burgoo, a thick and spicy stew, is the traditional meal. Make yours with a splash of Nielsen-Massey Vanilla Pure Coffee Extract, to deepen the flavor. burgoo

• Have guests pick a horse. Have a prize on hand for the person who selects the winning stead – a red rose bouquet would make a theme-appropriate prize.

• Treat guests to a slice of rich pecan pie for dessert, flavored with Nielsen- Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste (recipe below).

A from-scratch pecan pie will be the hit of the party. This carefully developed recipe makes sure every bite, including the rich crust, is flavorful with just a touch of crunch. Serve it warm, with a small scoop of high quality vanilla ice cream.

Pecan PiePecan Pie
Sweet Flaky Pastry Dough

2 cups plus 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
4 tablespoons superfine sugar
1 teaspoon fine salt
1 3/4 sticks unsalted butter, chopped into pieces
2 egg yolks
2 tablespoons cold water
2 tablespoons Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Paste or Extract

1. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Using your fingertips, rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine bread crumbs.

2. Make a well in the center and add the rest of the ingredients. Again using your fingertips, mix together to make a smooth dough.

3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and lightly knead two or three times. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes before using.

4. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface or piece of plastic wrap to 2 inches larger than you pan.

5. Grease a 9 inch diameter shallow pie plate or tart pan, then lift the dough over a rolling pin and lightly drape it over the pan. Peel away the plastic wrap, if using.

6. Gently lift the edges of the dough upward and ease the dough into position. Press the dough firmly but gently into place with your fingertips, making sure that there are no gaps between the dough and the pan.

7. Turn any excess dough outward over the run of the tart pan, then run the rolling pin over the top of the pan so that any excess dough is cut off. Smooth any rough edges with the side of a blunt knife. Prick the bottom of the pastry shell with a fork. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. (This will help to stop it from shrinking during baking.)

8. Place a large piece of nonstick parchment paper over the bottom and sides of the pastry shell. Fill the bottom with pie weights. (These are available from cookware department of large department stores and specialty cookware shops—or use dried uncooked beans.)

9. Bake in a preheated oven, at 350°F, for 10-15 minutes, or until the shell is just set, then remove the paper and weights and cook empty for another 10 minutes, or until the bottom is dry and crisp and the top edges of the tart are golden. Leave the piecrust in the pan and continue with the recipe.

Pecan Pie Filling
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing
All-purpose flour, for dusting
1 2⁄3 cups chopped pecans
1 cup pecan halves
2 1/2 oz semisweet dark chocolate, chopped
3 eggs
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar
2⁄3 cup maple syrup
2 teaspoons Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract
2 teaspoons bourbon whiskey (optional)
Preheat the oven to 350°F.

1. Place the chopped pecans and pecan halves on separate baking sheets and roast them in the oven for about 5 minutes, or until golden and fragrant.

2. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl set it over a saucepan of barely simmering water, making sure the surface of the water does not touch the bowl.

3. In a separate large bowl, beat the eggs with the sugar, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and bourbon, if using, then beat in the melted chocolate and butter.

4. Place the chopped pecans in the lined pie plate, cover with the maple and chocolate mixture, and arrange the pecan halves on top.

5. Bake in the oven for 50 minutes, or until golden and set. Serve warm, with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Serves 8

Tip: When roasting nuts in the oven, keep an eye on them at all times and don’t leave them unattended, because they can burn quickly.

This enticing recipe is provided by Chef Eric Lanlard from his cookbook Tart It Up! Sweet & Savor Tarts & Pies.

San Francisco 49ers Player Vernon Davis Has A Reason to Celebrate: Life Is Art Beyond The Superbowl

Vernon DavisThe Superbowl is over and although it may have been a disappointment for 49er fans, for one player, there is plenty to celebrate. Most professional football players are not opening art galleries and funding arts scholarships but then again, most professional NFL players, are not Vernon Davis. An artist in his free time, the 49ers tight end recently opened the art Gallery 85 in the Santana Row strip of San Jose.    Gallery 85 is not just a passing phase for Davis.  Vernon Davis is also a talented, trained visual artist who majored in studio art at the University of Maryland.

The art gallery is named after Davis’ 85 jersey number and heavily features his works.

Veron Davis

Among the more established names on display, like contemporary abstract artist Melissa Ayr and jazz painter Bruni Sablan, the mixed media sculptures of Nyijale (pronounced Nigel) Cummings –- the newest recipient of the Vernon Davis Scholarship for the Arts — shows the caliber of Davis, the Gallery and his cause.  The Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts was created by artist, athlete, and philanthropist Vernon Davis to promote art education and art appreciation among youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“We fulfill our mission by providing scholarships to dedicated art students and grants to deserving nonprofit programs who share in our ideals.”

The Red Zone at Gallery 85
Until February 10th, Gallery 85 is showing “The Red Zone” a curated group exhibition focusing on the works by artists in the Bay Area. The theme of the exhibition is a springboard to the gallery’s new space, the New Year and to highlight the Foundation’s mission.  Participating Artists: Melissa AyrJohn Casey, Alexis Amann, Namita Kapoor, Christine Morla, Phe Ruiz, Melody Kennedy, Manny Silva, Casey Gray, Randy Bricco, Garett Malate, Bruni, Mark Gray, Lorraine Lawson, Jason Burton, Bruni, Mark Gray and more.

Melissa-Ayr-Golden-Gate-Bridge-9-Crop-500Contemporary Abstract Artist, Melissa Ayr is an artist who paints with air. Born in New York, Ayr has emerged from her studio as an international contemporary abstract artist, with a fresh perspective on contemporary painting with her unique practice of using a leaf blower to push paint on canvas. Ayr releases her latest works as a collection inspired by California, the Poppy Collection sets the tone and elements of this floral series with vibrant luminosity. Classically trained in the elements of composition, color and perspective, Ayr creates her own canvas and color pallet with a mixture of pigment, oil and acrylic.  Her art is on the cutting edge of color with bold flowing blends of light and dark. Her style is colorful, vibrant, and full of texture. She incorporates high energy, fluidity, growth and life.   The Poppy collection is a body of work created entirely using air. Her instrument of choice is her signature leaf blower which enables Melissa to move layers of paint across the canvas with swift strokes creating an ethereal style that is neither tempered nor deliberate. http://www.melissaayr.com

Kick Up Your Heels!

TSAYS009_BVIt’s a new year and in 2013 it’s time to kick up your heels and show some sole!

Watching a brilliant fireworks display on New Year’s Eve at the stroke of midnight from my balcony got me thinking, “I’d like this year to be filled with color!”  So I couldn’t help but get started with something vibrant, fun and insatiably artistic.

So-Cal inspired, designer and artist Taylor Reeve is making the most motley statement with her signature, eye-catching art, imprinted on the soles of her one-of-a-kind exclusively crafted leather heels.  Patterns include designs that are soft and girly to edgy skull prints.

Taylor ReeveTaylorSays the new collection draws on just about everything in her path. Her inspiration comes from a wide array of influences like street and pop art to graffiti, tattoo and kustom culture; unique style that solely marks her work as an individual artist.

Taylor has created one of a kind artistic series for other companies like Quiksilver, Dragon, Bell Helmets and SkullCandy to name a few.  She even debuted a men’s outerwear line for Quiksilver last winter and has worked with custom bike builder Jesse Rooke for 6 years, adding her signature flair to some of his famous choppers.

Intensely relevant to the max.  YOU WILL BE KALEIDOSCOPICLY NOTICED!!!

Here’s “Tsu.ya!” Kristi Yamaguchi is More Than Just Dreaming

by Tracey Paleo ~ Gia On The Move

With the London 2012 Summer Games coming to a close on August 9th, Gia On The Move got a surprise treat when (Former Winter Olympian and US Skating Gold Medalist) Kristi Yamaguchi took some time out to talk to us about what its been like to be a champion, a mom, an entrepreneur and most of all an inspiration!

Since her days as an Olympic figure skater, Kristi has also been a New York Times best-selling children’s book writer, an NBC Olympics skating broadcast analyst, a Dancing with the Stars champion, head honcho and engine behind her Always Dream Foundation and in September, she will now be adding fashion designer to her list of talents.

Her activewear line, Tsu.ya (her middle name), set to launch in select Lord & Taylor stores, is inspired by her figure skating days, and will present a limited 18 piece edition of fun, trendy, modern chic, for fall with yoga pants, leggings, jackets, T’s and tops.  Designed especially for busy moms who want to look and feel great, the line will feature ultra-comfortable fabrics tucking you in where you need it to and accentuating your figure where you want it to.

Additionally, a portion of Tsu.ya sales will go to Kristi’’s Always Dream Foundation which funds programs that empower children to reach their dreams through education & inspiration. From giving back to the community to inspiring daily confidence, Tsu.ya is committed to helping women feel good both inside and out.

I’m ready to shop!

So I just had to ask…

Gia:  Kristi, you’ve done so much since your Olympic & World Skating days. I have to admit, I had been such a fan and loved watching you compete. Your gorgeous artistry, grace on the ice and all of the work you put into what you loved was so inspiring to me personally and I dare say so many others who breathed a sigh of relief after every Triple Lutz. What continues to inspire YOU these days to keep up your hectic pace as a mom, a writer, clothing designer/entrepreneur, on top of running a foundation?

Kristi:  Always having a challenge at hand keeps me young and inspires me. The work for the foundation inspires the board and myself and constantly motivates and pushes us to do more. My family, especially my two children, provide me with even more inspiration when there is energy and time to fit in other things as well.

Gia:  What was it really like being called #1 in the world? It seems pretty mind-blowing to think about holding that sort of title.

Kristi:  At that point, it was a mix of emotions. It validates years and years of hard work, dedication and support from family, coaches and everyone who has helped along the way. It really feels like a team accomplishment and it feels great to know it was worth it.

Gia:  The new clothing line — the looks are really sleek. What can we expect in terms of fits and sizes?

Kristi:  The sizes range from extra-small to large (so XS, S, M, L). The clothing fit is very conscious to flatter the female figure. The clothing has a nice fit and details that accentuate the female body. Some of the details that accentuate the female physique include ruffles, cinching and rouching.

Gia:  What separates Tsu.ya from other sports lines? You mention that having such a demanding lifestyle, until now you weren’t finding an active wear line to meet your needs. Are there any particular details that excited you in the process?

Kristi:  The fashion aspect differentiates Tsu.ya from other sports lines. The line is highly functional workout clothing with an added fashion sense. The comfort of the line allows the clothing to be worn outside the gym while on errands. The whole process is exciting. Developing the name and logo nods to my Japanese heritage. Incorporating the logo into designs with the Kersheh Group and adding a twist to women’s active wear were exciting as well.

Gia:  Always Dream — How involved are you on a day-to-day basis with the foundation? What role do you play?

Kristi:  I founded the Always Dream Foundation so I am the founder and head dream maker. I am highly involved with the foundation. My sister Lori is the executive director of Always Dream. I visit the office as least three times a week and nothing happens I do not know about or have a hand in.

Gia:  I grew up in the RIF Campaign (Reading is Fundamental) days, when inner city kids got to choose books off of a “book-mobile” that travelled around Boston, so I was really excited when I saw that the foundation supports the Raising a Reader program.  It’s definitely one of my favorites.  What are some of the cool ways Raising a Reader gets kids excited to read?

Kristi:  We are extremely happy to partner with the Raising a Reader literacy drive. The program gives kids a book bag to bring home. The drive encourages parent involvement in reading, which is a very important at-home component. We are bringing the technology side by providing e-readers for kids to experience two versions of books – electronic and hard copy.

Gia:  Finally — this one is from a fan of Gia On The Move and a dedicated reader, Keith Foraci of Denver, Colorado…Keith asks, “If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?”

Kristi:  I went straight into skating and tours and pushed College to the side. I missed out on a college experience and getting a degree would be the one thing that I would change in my life.

Gia:  Also, Carlos Stafford, The Model Critic (at Gia On The Move) asked, ” How do you think your time spent competing, informed you/prepared you, for your life as it is now?”

My time as competitive ice skater taught me how to set goals and expectations, as well as put work in and come to fruition. My experience competing taught me to focus on my goals at hand and work through the obstacles that I faced.

Barney’s Beanery Brings Olympic Games Tableside

The Summer Olympic games are approaching fast and from July 27th through August 12 Barney’s Beanery’s five locations are bringing all the excitement of the NBC broadcasted coverage of the London 2012 Olympiad table-side along with a meal, a brew via booth-side table screens.

“We learned from the 2008 Games that customers get caught up in the most unusual sports, like women’s weightlifting, synchronized swimming and canoe slalom, and  we are among the very few spots in town that can offer this unique  sports coverage day and night tableside,” said A.J. Sacher, regional manager.  Additionally, the Westwood location on Broxton avenue, once the gateway to the Olympic Village at UCLA, where in 1984 thousands of Olympians slept and practiced, will be offering a special plasma “Leader Board”  posting of competition results from all Olympic venues daily.

Carrying the Torch Libation

Barney’s Beanery will also pay tribute to the final miles of the Olympic Torch Run the preceding week, by offering up special pints of lager  from the country or region that the flame is passing through each day , sparking the commencement of the games in a way that will ignite revelry.

“London Calling” Starts Noon Daily

Given the nine-hour time difference between the United Kingdom and the U.S. that allows evening events to be aired at noon, Barney’s will not only be offering their traditional 700-item mega menu, but will be offering a variety of “Power Medal Lunch Specials” available from 11am- 3pm every day until the closing ceremony on August 12th.

Unique to its five roadhouses is the placement of more than 100 Plasma screens complete with a one-per-booth set-up allowing each party to view whatever they please, which is especially important during the Olympics when people’s preference of events vary so greatly. Additionally, Barney’s will dedicate a flat screen to act as a  leader board  displaying cumulative statistics of medals won by each country, allowing viewers to always be in the know on the latest action of their favorite event.

Get involved in  Olympic Game action at one of Barney’s five  locations, including the original at  8447 Santa Monica Blvd. West Hollywood; 3rd St. Promenade, Santa Monica: Burbank, 250 N. 1st Street, Burbank,  91502; Old Town Pasadena,99 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena; and Westwood village, 1037 Broxton Avenue.
